Iron Imbalances
Feeling weak, pale, dizzy, or short of breath? Iron imbalances—whether deficiency (anemia) or overload (hemochromatosis)—iron imbalances can lead to persistent fatigue. Other symptoms may include hair loss, cold hands and feet, brittle nails, and difficulty concentrating. Chronic infections, gut issues, and inflammation can impact iron absorption and regulation, further complicating energy production.
If you feel like you’ve tried everything and nothing’s worked, chances are you haven’t addressed the right root cause yet. Think of it like a car—you wouldn’t fix a dead battery by topping up the fuel. The same logic applies to your body: if something’s not working, there’s a physiological reason why.
Identifying and addressing those underlying factors is the crucial first step. And that’s exactly what I help my patients do—through 1:1 sessions, functional testing and my Energy Reset Program—so they can stop guessing and start truly recovering their energy. Join us!
Read on to learn how iron imbalances can cause fatigue, and what you can do about it.
What’s Going On in the Body?
Iron is essential for oxygen transport in red blood cells, and oxygen is required for proper energy production in the cells. Low iron levels reduce hemoglobin, which carry oxygen around the body. This can be caused by anemia - which has many causes and subtypes.
On the other hand, iron overload (hemochromatosis) can cause oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, also contributing to low energy.
What You Can Do About It:
Testing Options: Book your Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis. This includes a Comprehensive iron panel (ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, transferrin saturation), CBC, and inflammatory markers (CRP) plus other markers which can identify which type of anemia, as well as other imbalances that may be impacting your energy levels.
If iron deficient, you can optimize iron intake: Consume iron-rich foods (grass-fed meat, shellfish, dark leafy greens) and pair with vitamin C for better absorption.
Address underlying causes: If iron deficiency persists despite supplementation, gut health issues or chronic infections may be interfering with absorption.
Iron balance is critical for energy. Book a 1:1 consultation or join my Energy Reset Program to uncover the root cause.
